For all the vampluvrs who luv the unconventialness of the vast vampgenre out there...*hugegrin* they may not love on this one too much. *snickers* But it's a helluva great read. Major frakkin spoilers here.
Late-night radio you can sink your teeth into....
Recovering con artist Ciara Griffin is trying to live the straight life, even if it means finding a (shudder!) real job. She takes an internship at a local radio station, whose late-night time-warp format features 1940s blues, 60s psychedelia, 80s Goth, and more, all with an uncannily authentic flair. Ciara soon discovers how the DJs maintain their cred: they're vampires, stuck forever in the eras in which they were turned.
Ciara's first instinct, as always, is to cut and run. But communications giant Skywave wants to buy WMMP and turn it into just another hit-playing clone. Without the station--and the link it provides to their original Life Times--the vampires would "fade," becoming little more than mindless ghosts of the past. Suddenly a routine corporate takeover becomes a matter of life and un-death.
To boost ratings and save the lives of her strange new friends, Ciara re-brands the station as "WVMP, the Lifeblood of Rock 'n' Roll." In the ultimate con, she hides the DJs' vampire nature in plain sight, disguising the bloody truth as a marketing gimmick. WVMP becomes the hottest thing around--next to Ciara's complicated affair with grunge vamp Shane McAllister. But the "gimmick" enrages a posse of ancient and powerful vampires who aren't so eager to be brought into the light. Soon the stakes are higher--and the perils graver--than any con game Ciara's ever played....

Recovering conartist my ass...Ciara's more like a gambler with a habit. Plus, it's a sorta bad grudge I had with the story. Idgit uses a con to save the station twice over. First one wasn't so bad. But then I wanted to slap her on the second. I mean wtf with this? In the beginning she disavows the whole schtick trying to make an honest life of herself and has this whole parental issue in teaching her the life.
Hello? Can we say hypocrite? She judges her parents and the life when she uses the same shit to save the station and steal money near the end. At the same time condeming her father who reappears to help her pull off the con. WWWeeelll, turning traitor didn't help his case either....and when you stop to look at it, why the hell did he do it? Here he was in good graces with the leos & gradually working back into his daughters good graces and there he go ruining it all by turning traitor.

But still...damn it was good. Why? The writing was amazing, the characters memorable, plotline dartboard worthy. All in all makes you wonder the hell about the author herself.
Oh, the lines were soooo memorable. If I kept the paperback it would have posty flags all over which is why I'm determined to get my own copy. The suckiness of technology wouldn't let me post all the yummy quotes I just luved the hell out of. And the VAMPS! *grins*
We who read alot noticed the variety of takes on vamps out there. Some who can go out in sun...most who can't. Staking some yes, some no. Blah blah...
This was sooo classic..call it a sorta cross between Lost Boys and Buffy. *grins* The vamps made in the 50s get sorta stuck in the 50s..they get stuck in the era they were made in. Definitely not a whole lotta pros in being a vamp here. Yes, I am lmao. It's just a refreshing and hilarious view.
Some parts sad, most parts kinda cool on the music stand point. XD Hell I luv the whole vamps and radio bit, how the chapters are actual song titles..yeah...big sucka I am. And Smith-Ready have the freakin playlists on her site. *grins*

So if you're not a big vampluvr this book is for you..you'll relate. *grins*

*clears throat* I'm thinkin' I'm not so good on details. Okay lemme explain as to why a not so big vampluvr would be able to like, sorta, or relate to Ciara. Well, for one she's not a vamp and in the beginning her biggest issue was getting a job. Big neonlight issue. She's trying to make a clean life for herself with a short resume.
Then she makes the mistake of applying at the radio station where they have some pretty....ummm...vintage people? So she's there under the title of marketing intern trying to get an employable job to pay for college. There she meets Shane, one of the radio dj's. *hint okay* XD
Gets the job *because* of her ummm..questionable background gets a *huge* stack of books to read where one has a pamphlet or something from a training manual on vamps. She thinks they've lost their ever lovin mind and quits. David, the manager/human, exControl officer, blah...sends Shane to convince her they are all on the up and up, right.
*Grins* So because Shane and Ciara have the hots for each other start making out and in the middle of one particular orgasm. OW! She's bitten on her thigh by Shane, who freaks her out by the pain and the fangs and kicks him in the head, throws clothes @ him and kicks him out.
End of that, right? Wrong. She puts two and two together, comes to her funky conclusion on the reality of the vamps and takes the job. Yes, there's more to the story folks. Needless to say there's a *HELLUVA* lotta stuff to Ciara & Shane they do eventually have sex and a relationship. After she makes him promise her to never bite her as a vamp but mock bite her. Yeah, I know, right?
Needless to say, I like her *and* hate her. But it's the fucking writing that's the best. Ciana, I could seriously kick the girl in the ass. Smart and fucking hypocritically stupid at the same time. But hell it's all about her background, right? The sins of the father and shit. What an effin fighter...*rolls eyes*
I'm of the school of this...what doesn't kill you will make you stronger. But this is a review and all that mess. *lol* Not a whatever...heh..
Oh, did I mention when the vamp dies it aint pretty here? This is why Smith-Ready kills me. She's created this whole 'verse where the vamp literally turns inside out and disappears. In LK Hamilton's Mercy Gentry series, Mercy has what is called the 'hand of blood' a fae gift that's like that of her fae father. Where the power calls to the blood and turns an individual inside out ball of mess, goo, and organs. Pretty damn nasty. Hamilton goes into great detail at this. Yeah. Can we say cop show? heh. Anyway. When a vamp is staked and you pull the stake back out the hole creates a vacuum that sucks the vamp inside out. Pretty nasty. Takes splattered blood and everything.
Okay. There's more. Ya would just have to read it and I gotta run. Love on the details. *grins*
